We all know how expensive getting married can be. Most people will have set a budget on their wedding expenses and so shopping around for great deals will just be a another part of the planning process. This is often the case with over 70% of all weddings held in Canada and no doubt worldwide.

We all would like to have complete satisfaction on our special day. This could be in planning, atmosphere or whichever other way would please the heart. Unfortunate for most, this is not often enough the case and they are forced to improvise.

A wedding is often the most cherished and memorable day of any persons life. On this day especially, every bride wants to feel and look beautiful regardless of the cost.

Cost is a factor in most things the heart desires but, sometimes the alternatives for saving more on cost does not have to be through improvising, but rather by shopping smart and giving yourself enough lead time in order to have better control over your choices and decisions

Shopping around for bargains on wedding gowns is OK for some brides, however for others, the cost of their perfect wedding gown should not be considered as an area of their wedding budget that should be minimized in order to meet other expenses. If you are one of those women that feel as though a discounted wedding gown won’t give you the same benefits as one found in a fancy bridal boutique, think again! There are many beautiful styles of designer name brands and other well known available in stores that are likely right around the corner from you and, not all of them will cost you a small fortune.

We have listed a few ways to help you in your search for a stunning gown at a price you can feel good about.

Bridal Boutiques-
All boutiques change over their stock and selection throughout the year. Seasons and styles are the two most common reasons for gowns to go on sale. Shop the sale racks, it’s the best way to find designer names and unbeatable prices. Although wedding gowns come in many different styles, styles will repeat themselves over and over with slight changes to fabric and details. If you have an idea on the perfect style for you, searching the sale racks should not be too strenuous, it should actually be a matter of flipping through to see if anything catches your eye.

Sale racks offer wedding gowns with price cuts of up to 50% off at times. As you can see it may be a good idea to check them out first when entering a bridal shop. Maintain focus however when you shop bridal stores, they can also be the most expensive places to purchase your gown, designer brand quality, top prices and aggressive sales people are often the case for this. If you enter a bridal salon to check out the clearance racks make sure you don’t get pushed into trying regular priced merchandise on.

This can mess up your search for a gown that fits your wedding budget as you may get distracted to the hype of aggressive intros and marketing. If you do find something you like in a bridal shop, be sure it’s not too off in size, alterations on a wedding gown can cost a small fortune.

Custom tailored wedding gowns-
There are many reputable seamstresses that are qualified and experienced with wedding gowns. Finding the right person for this job is hard and unless you have a referral from someone who has already gone this rout.
Having a dress made could save you a lot of money, however, unless you can be sure of the service you will receive this can lead to frustration and can become more problem than its worth. If a reputable dress maker is found you’re in luck. A custom made wedding gown can cost you hundreds of dollars less than one purchased from a store or catalog.

The biggest cost in having a gown custom made is the fabric and labor; costs of fabric will vary depending on the quality you will be buying. Having a wedding gown made will save you money on alterations and the high mark up costs that are associated with purchasing from a salon or specialty shop. A downfall in having your gown custom tailored is that it may not fit to you exactly as you would have or bargained for. This is not necessarily a common case but is possible and is worth noting before making the decision to. Finding a qualified dressmaker that can offer you referrals will give you a better peace of mind in this decision.

Shop bridal outlets-
Warehouse outlets can offer you a huge selection of styles at unbeatable prices. These stores are not full service and customers are often on their own when entering. Prices are slashed due to the change of season and or size selections. Sometimes, small defects or end of the line items are sent to these stores though, major problems are not commonly seen. Defected dresses are usually labeled with a description of the problem; so don’t worry about buying a dress with an unknown problem.

These stores are usually full of many styles, great deals and sizes for everyone but if you expect to get assistance from sales specialists don’t hold your breath. Gowns that are purchased from a warehouse are not held or put on layaway. Full payment is required and alterations are not usually provided through the store. Exchange and return policies may vary but in most cases, sales are final. Be sure you check the gown for defects and be clear of the return policy before you pay for the gown.

Shop Consignment-
Yes that’s right; consignment stores are great places to locate perfect dresses at great prices. A wedding gown is usually worn by one person and only for a few hours to a day. Consider checking out the consignment stores in your area, you may be surprised with the amount of money you can save. A consignment store is a place that sells articles or in this case clothes for people who no longer needs them. The clothing is placed on consignment for a week or so at a set price. Once the item gets sold the store will take a commission and the rest of the money will go back in the hands of the person who wanted it sold.
As you can see a consignment store is much different than a second hand store that receives donations, but rather a place that sells perfectly good items for people looking to free up some space in their closets maybe.

Consignment stores expect merchandise to be freshly laundered and in suitable salable condition. You may find designer styles and names for as low as 75% off of the market value, giving you a beautiful gown at an unbelievable price. One other thing to consider, if you are not fussy about keeping your wedding gown after you are through with it, then maybe the thought of making some money from it might be a good idea.

This might be a thought to hold on to for a little extra back-in-pocket cash. Consignment stores are easily located in every city, give them a shot and check out what they have to offer, this could provide you with that extra savings you were looking for while your luck good present you with much more than you had hoped.

Shop the Classifieds-
You may save a few hundred dollars by shopping in the classified section of your local newspaper. There are many brides who find themselves with a wedding gown they no longer want hanging around or in some cases they may have had a change of mind with no other options. For some brides this change of hearts may simply be in favor of wearing their mother’s dress for sentimental reasons. Whether new or used, buying a wedding gown out from the classified ads may benefit you and save you some money but be sure to try it on and check it through for damages or stains.

Rent don’t buy-
Yes, there is such a thing as renting a wedding gown. Men, aren’t the only one’s with such an option, women can rent bridal attire and bridesmaids dresses too. Usually a large selection of styles and sizes are available. A deposit is normally required before the dress can be yours for renting. This is to lots of brides on limited budgets, a great way to go without spending more money than is necessary.

Remodel your mothers previously worn gown-
If your mother still has her old wedding gown and you are deciding on whether to wear it for sentimental purposes or because you cant afford to buy one, consider having it freshened up with a new look. Freshening up an old wedding gown should be done by a professional depending on how much changes you want to make to it. Cleaning and altering the dress might be the two areas most mandatory. Other than taking off lace, shortening or recreating the fullness of the gown is commonly done to reconstruct and modernize the appearance of a vintage gown.
