Questions to Ask a Disc Jockey or Musician

As with any other area of service, it is important to ask general related questions before deciding on the service providers to hire. Here is a list of questions you may want to ask while interviewing a potential disc jockey service provider for your event.

  • Do you have a reservation deadline?
  • Will I get to hear or see a demo of your performance?
  • What is your arrival time going to be for the reception?
  • How much time will you need to set up?
  • Will the set up be done before guests arrive?
  • My estimated budget for entertainment is $____ , what can I expect from your service with this amount?
  • Do you offer any discounts or packages?
  • With our provided budget, can you creatively offer any suggestions or ideas on how you could work within this, maybe by having less musicians, More taped music, Shorter playing time? Etc.
  • Will we be able to control the volume of the music through remote control of some kind?
  • The number of people that are estimated to attend our wedding is between 150 to 200. What extra equipment or resources will be needed to play for a larger number, more musicians, bigger system or sub woofers etc.?
  • Do you have any other functions to attend on the same day as my wedding?
  • Do you work from a predetermined song list or do you get a feel for the crowd to determine the music to play?
  • Are you equipped with liability insurance should someone accidently trip over your equipment?
  • Where else, if any, could I hear your band or D.J. style played (club, or bar)?
  • Will you be the person or persons playing at my reception?
  • Will you and or the band be attired in appropriate clothing or uniform?
  • How long have you been entertaining professionally?
  • Will you require any special accessories or positions at the reception site, such as extra outlets, extension cords, extra microphones, stage or remote location for set up?
  • What are your service fees and are certain days cheaper than others?
  • Do you charge differently depending on the season?
  • Will I need to give you a deposit and when will you require both deposit and full payment?
  • Do you charge by the hour or do you offer a flat rate plan?
  • Do you have a wide selection of music to choose from?
  • How much time am I paying for and how many breaks will be taken?
  • Do you entertain with an assistant?
  • What does your sound system include?
  • Will you take requests from the guests?
  • Do you encourage audience participation?
  • What kind of music do you specialize in?
  • Is there a specific age group you usually perform for?
  • How many musicians will perform and if musical instruments are used, of what type will they be?
  • On average how many wedding do you perform at?
  • Do you charge more if I want to hire you as master of ceremony as well?
  • What music style do you enjoy playing most?
  • Do you expect to be supplied alcohol and dinner during the event? If so how much?
  • During your breaks will you provide continuous taped music?
  • If you are needed for a longer time than expected will you stay and perform? If so, how much is your over time charge per hour?

Extra question that can be asked to a disc jockey

  • What kind of equipment do you use?
  • What kind of playback medium do you use?
  • Do you charge more for being hired as master of ceremony?
  • Do you work from a play list of songs and what list of songs can I choose from?
  • Do you display your companies name on a sign? (Many couples will not allow advertising at their wedding reception)
  • Will you obtain songs that I request ahead of time?
